VBS Success
I want to thank those who worked so hard proving the materials
and praise God for a successful VBS. We had classes for kids ages 2
through 6th grade. Our high number was 43 mates on Tuesday night,
with 13 in the kindergarten class alone! We also had an adult class
with average participation of about 16. I received many comments
from members that this was the best VBS they had seen in a while. We
took many, (view photos) and
provided an awesome slide show for the closing program. Thanks
again! The week was awesome overall, but, must
importantly, we had four professions of faith this week! Can't beat
that for highlights!

Thank you
I wanted to write and thank all of you who had a part in writing
the materials and putting this all together. As the
preschool/kindergarten teacher and also the music director for VBS
this year I truly enjoyed studying the material and learning the
music before hand. This was the first year that we sang the music
that went with the theme and the children loved the songs! My
children are still listing to the CD they love it so much. Thank you
again for all of your hard work.

Snacks/Crafts
Hello, every one after reading the message board I noticed a lot
of questions about snacks, last year we went to our local school
board and was provided with a snack lunch, for each kid, thru the
school board a summer program they had set up, you have to have a
place to store all the food for a week, as you get it all at once,
our VBS is July 13-15 this year and any craft idea would be
appreciated.

VBS Hooray!
We had a GREAT VBS at West Bauxite Missionary Baptist Church on
June 24! It was so obvious that the Lord had prepared the children's
hearts, and that was a tremendous blessings. We do rotational, and
every single group who came in our class was respectful and listened
to every word we said. When we asked review questions after the
lesson, each group knew every answer. I say that to encourage those
who will soon be having VBS. Keep working and keep praying. It is SO
much work, but it is SO worth it! We have kids asking questions
about salvation since VBS, so the Lord is still working.
I have attached pictures from our
day. Hope you all enjoy. A special thanks to Robin Peddy for all
the inspiration and information you shared with us during
preparation! VBS - Hooray!!!

I found that blowing up large back trash bags and pin them to

lightning bolts make good thunderclouds for lesson 5.

Left Over Decorations
Our church just finished this VBS and we have a lot of really
nice decorations left over. We used the Styrofoam panels to do a
huge background and also made 7 ft crocodile and a 5 ft kangaroo for
the penny collection. Also we did the jeep for the photo op. They
are really nice and we hate to throw them all out. If you are in or
around the Houston area you can come pick them up. I have pictures.

Closing Program Ideas
I was thinking about doing a Power Point presentation and
hopefully include some video footage of the kids throughout the week
to use as the main focus for our closing program. I wonder if anyone
has done this. I thought it could be effective to promote it
throughout the week as "The Aussie Awards". We would do pledges and
let the kids perform the songs, then they could watch the "clips".
Kids love to see themselves on "TV" and then we would present the
Aussies to the children. Of course, it would be emphasized that
Jesus always has the "starring role" in VBS. Another cute wordplay
would be to use the term "a star is born...again".
Last year we opted not to do the awards to the volunteers in the
closing program to save time and keep the kids from getting fidgety.
We had an early supper just for the workers and presented their
awards at that time. That worked well and we'll do that again this
year.
Also, instead of the typical certificates, we used blank card stock
and created a keepsake for each of the kids. It included the logo,
theme and synopsis, the dates, a page for a gold star to be added
for each day of attendance, and we added little stick-on picture
corners and took Polaroids of each child at the photo prop to be
added to his/her "certificate". It was a little more work, but
relatively simple still and well worth it.
I'd love to hear from anyone who has more ideas for the closing
program.

Closing Program Ideas
The Powerpoint idea for closing program works great. We have
been doing it for several years now. We use pictures taken
throughout the week of kids in various VBS activities. We've made
the mistake also of making it too long. 4-5 minutes (the length of a
good song, like "Thank You" by Ray Boltz) works great. With a 3
second delay, you can still show a lot of photos. We show it at the
end of the program, on a large projector screen, just before closing
remarks from our pastor. It's entitled "The Week In Review" on the
programs. It is looked forward to by all as it gives the parents and
grandparents the opportunity to see how your church has ministered
to their children during the week.
Praying for your VBS,

VBS for Juniors
You all have got some great ideas. This is my second year
actually Teaching VBS. I am use to working with the Pre-K thru 2nd
Grade age group. This year I have taken on a big challenge for
myself. My husband and I are going to be teaching the Juniors Class.
I thought this would be a good way to let him witness to some
children yet stay on a level he can communicate the best with. I was
wondering if anyone had some ideas on how to just blow the socks off
of these Kids. I needs some ideas for teaching, decorating, and
crafts that are just Awesome! We are only doing a one day VBS so I
am want to make this day one that they will never forget. Thank you
so much for any ideas you can pass along.

Thank You
We are in VBS this week (June 12th - 16th). I want to say thank
you to the one who had the idea to make didgeridoos out of golf club
tubes. We are letting all the kids make one. We have also made
"boards" that are approximately 2 ft. by 6 ft. for the kids to paint
"Aboriginal artwork" in mural form. Each class has their own
'board'. We then display their work in the sanctuary along with our
other decor. It looks really cute. I also found lots of information
on
www.australia.com and
actually printed off some of it to use as decor in our crafts room.
They are more educational type posters, but interesting.
We have a meal every evening before VBS rather than having a snack
time. This has worked very well for us, since the majority of our
volunteers work as well. We have a kitchen crew that prepares the
food, and this year they decorated our fellowship hall in the theme
of Crocodile Cafe. It is very cute, and the 'real' meal helps keep
us all going rather than being wound up on sugar.
We also are having the adult class this year, and it has been a hit

Jail Scene
Hey Everybody, If you are planning to take on this great task
let me share some things if you have not gotten started. We tried to
find the styrofoam blocks, no luck. We were stuck on using PVC pipe
and tonight we just finished spray painting everything. After all
our trials and looking back we suggest that you use skinny slats of
wood and attach then to a board across the top, bottom and middle to
make two walls. We tried to stand the PVC pipe up with small wood
pegs we cut to go inside each end of the PVC pipes. No luck with
glue to hold pegs. Gorilla glue did not work either. We ended up
gluing each end of PVC pipe to a long slat of wood and tie them more
secure with auto plastic ties (like trash bags ties). We will screw
the bottom of each wall into the base of our jail which is a 5 by 4
piece of plywood. The two edges of the plywood have a long slat of
wood nailed to it for the walls to screw down into. Once my crew
member decided to look at this as though she was building a wall
things started to fall into place after several mishaps. Our VBS
starts Monday night June 12th so we were pressed for time. Our jeep
cam out great. We cut it out of plywood also and had to construct a
stand to hold it up straight. We used silver and red paint to add
detail instead of making it all yellow. We cut out a 5ft 9in
Kangaroo. He has a cut out pouch which the Mates will put their
mission offering through so it can fall down into a basket behind
the Kangaroo. Good luck all. If i get a chance to post our pictures
I will. Praise God for a job completed and awaiting the mates next
week. Does anybody know the theme for next year of the lesson
setting? We wish the information was out sooner because our VBS is
early and we were pressed for time.

Room Decorations
I am teaching the Junior class for VBS. One idea that I have for
room decorations, is to use an artificial tree, and put a stuffed
koala bear in it. Also I am trying my best to find an inflatable
kangaroo. I have done a Google search on it, and you would be
surprised at how hard it is to find one. I live in AR. and there is
an Australian themed store in Little Rock on JFK, and he is trying
to get one for me. I want it to be at least 4 or 5 feet tall. Also I
am going to get an inflatable crocodile and put up warning signs
(that I will either make or buy from the Aussie store) The one thing
that I'm having problems with is my bulletin board (for some reason
I can't decide how to do it) I'm using the idea that my teachers
guide suggest, but I don't know where to begin with it, because all
the pictures are small, so I'll have to use an overhead projector,
and our church doesn't have one....( I may buy one from ebay or see
if the school will let me borrow one) For crafts we are making a
bird house out of a 1/2 gallon milk carton. A didgeridoo from the
PVC pipe. Boomerangs from thin plywood (that I am pre-cutting) A
burlap style bag (fits under mattress on bed, and hangs off the
side) Those are the only crafts we are doing, bc the birdhouse will
be a two day job. Good luck to everyone who is working in Bible
school. I know that God will bless all our efforts.....

Crocodile Snack Ideas
For all of those out there that like the snack idea for lesson one
found in the director's book but don't have the time to
back.....here's a short cut. Look for Nutter Butter peanut shaped
peanut butter cookies at your local store along with a bag of small
round candies (ie: M&M's, Reese's Pieces, Red Hots, etc.) and a bag
a Cake Make Easy Squeeze White Cake Frosting (along a decorating
tip). Everything just mentioned can be purchased at Wal-mart and
found within a isle or two. Place your cookies on a plate, squeeze
out enough icing on the top of the widest end of the cookie, enough
to set a pair of eyes (use the candy of your choosing), then squeeze
out some icing along the edge of the narrower end to make some
dangerous looking teeth and some nostrils if you want....be
creative. You'll have the same crocodile look in half the time.

We love VBS and this year's theme is amazing!! We go all out for
decorations and have lots of ideas to share. Food-vegimite sandwiches
(just kidding). Here is a website that one of our church members
(Megan Parker) found that has some great ideas:
http://www.dltk-kids.com/world/australia/
For wall decorations we line our walls with paper (color of your
choice) purchased at a school supply store and then paint the
life-size scenery using the overhead projector. We also go on
Oriental Trading company for inexpensive craft ideas. We used a
PowerPoint presentation last year and included a synopsis of each
lesson and then photos of all of the kids. If you would like a copy
of last year's presentation you may email me your address.
We have our VBS in the
evening from 6-8pm and we will run our bus this year each night. We
also use the materials a bit differently from other churches. We
(the teachers) learn only one lesson. We rotate the kids to
different classes and different teachers each evening. We LOVE it
this way. This way we can really go all out on decorating just one
room each. It makes it better on the teachers.

VBS Messages
I was just scanning some of the messages on the board and so
much quickly entered my mind. This is my 2nd year with this
publisher and it is great. Check
www.OrientalTrading.com for
props. There is a store here in Arkansas called Everything Australia
http://everythingaustralian.com
and they have a website as well. Wonderful store and website. I
ordered some inflatable from
www.thebigzoo.com
Wonderful stuff. Check out the Serta website for counting sheep to
purchase. I have not spent a great deal of money. We drew our
Kangaroo and Jeep on large pieces of plywood using an overhead
projector. They are awesome. We cut the 3-D props out of cardboard,
good also. There are so many snacks and arts and craft ideas in the
lesson packs. Last year I added, will not do that this year.
Everything is in the program material. Check oriental trading for
supplies. I ordered flags from the internet. They were about $1.40
each. Made letters for song READY SHARE... use Microsoft Word, get
letters as large as can on sheet of tag or paper and then glue on
tag, laminate. Good luck everybody. We are taking it to another
level this year and my Pastor and church are on fire and
anticipating this event next month.
I have held several training meetings and the faithful few come. We
color our scenes on twin sheets, cut kangaroo and jeep out so far,
our mission outreach offering will purchase Christmas items for
local nursing home where we have members as residents. All who went
to Texarkana are on fire and just full of excitement. This is year
two for me as VBS director and I am loving this outreach event.

VBS Offering Project:
As many of you know, we have been on the Mission Field in Australia
since 1969. And although there have been a number of missionaries
associated with our work come and go, as far as I am aware, I am
the only active ABA associated missionary remaining in Australia.
I understand the mission field selected for the focus of the VBS
material this year is Australia. I have had a number of Pastors/VBS
Directors contact me about furnishing appropriate information to be
helpful in their Vacation Bible Schools. I would be pleased to help
as many as possible.
At the present time we are working on a DVD, approximately 15 - 20
minutes in length, to furnish to those who would wish to use it.
Alternatively, we can offer a Power Point presentation. These
presentations will contain footage of the unique fauna and flora of
Australia as well as information about the history and culture of
the country. It will also contain a brief history of our work in
Australia in establishing a number of churches and missions, as well
as the challenge for the future. We will utilize slides, photos and
video footage covering this history.
A young man, Andrew Horsten, who is quite skilled in IT and media
matters and who helps me in ministry, has obtained a professional
camera and equipment that we are using in recording our services and
developing evangelistic outreach and discipleship materials. This
equipment and his expertise will be used for the DVD/Power Point
presentations.
I can email helpful photos to anyone who would like them and could
print them out for use. I am also willing to obtain Australiana
items, such as small boomerangs, flags and posters etc. and mail
them. I would only ask that any church wishing this, help a bit
with expense and postage. Since Air Mail can take 7 - 14 days, it
would be important to let me know as early as possible what you
would like to have etc.
I have also been asked about a Special Project. We are in the
process of purchasing a van/bus/camper to use in our Outback
Outreach Ministry. This will be used in ministry here as well as in
distributing tracts and discipleship materials, including our DVD
materials to more outlying areas in Queensland in particular.
Offerings for this project may be sent to our sponsoring church,
Grace Baptist, Bowie, MD. Designated for Australian Missions -
Outback Outreach Fund.

Didgeridoo
I recently purchased some didgeridoo music from a merchant on
Ebay who specializes on these instruments and this type of music. I
e-mailed him to inquire on inexpensive and easy methods to make
one......here is his response:
"I've done this with
some of my school workshops where the kids make instruments. Pretty
easy to do and cheap to boot! Is to get golf club tubes (tubes you
put in the golf bag to organized your clubs). Golf club tubes are
about 3' long and made of plastic and work as nice cheapo starter
didges (usually around a buck in cost), there's even an end on them
that works perfect as the mouthpiece end so no need to deal with
messy wax. I've either suggested taping butcher paper around them or
contact paper so the kids can draw or paint artwork on them."
(I got one of these tubs
from someone in our church who golfs. It's black, light weight
plastic and could be painted on without first covering with paper if
bright colored paints are used. I found them on-line for 85c each
and you can purchase from Walmart, but I don't know their (Walmart's)
price.
